Urban Commonwealth
Urban Commonwealth is, at its core, an exercise in ‘forest building’. Embedded in its context of the built environment and ecology, the proposal aims to rewild Savannah’s downtown in such a way that balances human needs as well as those of non-human inhabitants.
Understanding the lack of connectivity and integration between ostracized low-income communities and Savannah’s historic downtown drives the research and development toward a network of individual nodes directing toward the urban forum that exists at the Savannah Civic Center.
There currently exist several physical and psychological barriers that impede pedestrian travel looking to venture out of these isolated communities towards the historic district. Urban Commonwealth seeks to occupy and reinvigorate the Savannah Civic Center, a monumental piece of New Formalist architecture, at the heart of the historic district downtown. Using this as the hub, the urban development plan begins to extend outward in a multi-phase approach to directly connect to low-income communities.
